Blumhouse Games Will Initially Prioritize New Ideas Rather Than Existing IP, Says Jason Blum

2 min read

Blumhouse Games, the new interactive division of the film and TV production company Blumhouse, will get its feet wet by focusing first on original ideas rather than making games based on existing IP.

In a recent interview with IGN, Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum explained a bit more about what fans of the horror studio can expect as it throws its hand into the game development ring. When asked if Blumhouse would make games based on their existing films, Blum said, “in the medium or long term, possibly. In the near term, that’s not the strategy for the company.”

“The strategy for the company is to do the same thing with games that we do with movies: look for original, low-budget things that could be turned into games,” he continued. “More likely, we’d take a game that worked and make a movie out of it. In the medium and long term, who knows?”

Blum’s comments line up closely with what the company initially announced earlier this year when it planned to try its hand at developing and publishing games under a new gaming division. The company revealed the plan was to lean on low-budget projects, with the target being $10 million or below, although there was plenty of speculation on whether or not Blumhouse would lean on its already-established properties.

Founded in 2000, Blumhouse has garnered a reputation for producing low-budget horror flicks that become a hit at the box office. Blumhouse Productions is behind several well-known horror films, such as The Purge, Happy Death Day, M3GAN, Get Out, Insidious, and notably, the Paranormal Activity series.

Our full interview with Blum is not out (yet), but stay tuned for more from our chat with the prolific producer.
